This year, L’Ecole Koenig participated in the Great Kindness Challenge during the last week of January. The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive and positive bullying prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement. It is one week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible on campus. It all started in 2012 in California, US with 3 schools only. In 2020, over 15,000,000 children participated, that is over 28,000 schools in over 110 countries. This resulted in over 750,000,000 acts of kindness.

“At the heart of The Great Kindness Challenge is the simple belief that kindness is strength.” GKC
“Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind, the second is to be kind, and the third is to be kind.” Henry James
“When given the choice between being right or being kind, be kind.” Dr W.W. Dyer

Running the program in L’Ecole Koenig provided a powerful tool that actively engaged students, teachers, administrators and families in creating a culture of compassion, acceptance, unity and respect. Using a provided kindness checklist, children accepted the challenge and showed our community that KINDNESS MATTERS!

Parents also were very involved as they organized a wide variety of events:

  • Breakfasts to thank the teachers
  • Making of drawings and baking cookies to thank the Dupleix park staff
  • Can food drive for Les Restos du Coeur
  • Toy drive for Necker Hospital

The GKC poem was adapted into a song by Aurélien Parent-Koenig and the children sing it everyday as part of their circle:

I pledge to use my words
To speak in a kind way.
I pledge to help others
As I go throughout my day.
I pledge to care for our earth
With my healing head and hands.
I pledge to respect people
In each and every land.
I pledge to join together
As we unite the big and small.
I pledge to do my part
To create PEACE for one and all.
